Welcome to the cherry extravaganza that is the National Cherry Festival of Traverse City! This annual event isn't just about cherries – it's a vibrant celebration of community, culture, and the bountiful harvest that defines the Grand Traverse region. From cherry-themed culinary delights to lively events, this festival is a sweet reminder of why Traverse City holds the title of Cherry Capital of the World. So, grab a slice of pie, join in the fun, and let the cherry-filled adventures begin!

Since its humble beginnings around 1910 when cherry growers in the Grand Traverse area initiated informal "blessing of the blossoms" ceremonies, the Cherry Festival has blossomed into a beloved local tradition. In 1925, the inaugural crowning of the Cherry Queen, Gertrude Brown, marked the start of a cherished custom that continues annually. Transitioning into a week-long celebration in 1968, the festival gained national recognition. Spectacular moments like the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds' inaugural performance in 1978 and the Cherry Royale Parade's record-breaking attendance in 1975, with President Gerald Ford as Grand Marshal, have solidified its place in American culture. Traverse City's world-record-breaking cherry pie, baked in 1987 at a staggering 17 ft 6 in and weighing 28,350 pounds, stands as a testament to the festival's monumental spirit and enduring legacy.
